Sitting in an office chair is pretty much inevitable for most of us that spend the majority of our days sitting and working in front of the computer. Most office chairs get put to good use, with some spending hours of overtime regularly as well as more time sitting in a chair than sleeping in a bed at night. If you are anything like me, you do not take time to consider just how much use you get out of your office chair, especially if you are sitting 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Those countless hours of use can add up and eventually wear down your chair. For most, this will happen sooner than expected especially if your chair is not properly taken care of. Cleaning and maintaining your office chair are key components to prolonging the life of your chair but it takes more than just a wipe down with a rag to keep your chair looking new. If you want to extend your office chair's life, save your money and the hassle of having to continuously purchase new chairs there are certain necessary steps to take to get more out of your chair.
Purchase a Chair That is Built to Last - The easiest way to ensure that a chair will be designed to withstand years of use is to purchase a chair that is built to last. This is simple, if you are looking for a bargain chair at your nearest Staples or Office Depot, perhaps you will get a great price but in turn you will also be receiving a chair that is made of bargain components. In other words, it will not last you as long as you might expect and you will most likely need to purchase another new chair a year or two down the line. It actually makes more sense in the long run to spend more on a chair that will last ten years then to have to continuously purchase new chairs every year, and is less of a hassle.
Look at the Manufacturer Warranty - Almost every office chair comes with a manufacturer warranty, and if they do not it is probably not worth your investment. It is crucial to read each manufacturer's warranty to determine if the chair of interest will be a worthwhile purchase. Find out what parts are warranted and for how long each component of the chair is warranted for. You can tell a lot by a manufacturer's warranty; if their parts are warranted for 10 years or have a lifetime warranty, this shows they are that confident in their product and construction of their chair that they are willing to take the risk of extending the warranty for multiple years. Remember when a part breaks on your office chair, that comes out of the manufacturer's funds to have to replace it which is why some warranties are very limited. It is important to keep in mind that all manufacturer's will warrant their seat fabrics for less time than their components, which is standard with everyone because this is the first part of all chairs to fade with time due to how often it gets rubbed/used. If you want to make certain that the fabric on your chair will not fade over time, try looking for a chair that has a higher grade fabric as an option or opt for a vinyl/leather chair that tolerate a bit more use and abuse than fabric chairs.
Clean Your Chair Regularly - Spills and stains are bound to happen as well as unpleasant order, which is why it is important to be proactive in cleaning your office chair regularly. A good upholstery cleaner will do the trick and keep your chair looking new for years. Keep your upholstery cleaner and a clean rag in a convenient location in case a spill happens. Look for defective casters/wheels, loose securing bolts, loose arms, broken mechanism, and evidence of cracks on the base of the chair from stress. If any of these parts are broken, contact your furniture dealer to see if these parts are under warranty. As aforementioned, if your chair has a good warranty, you should be able to get these replacement parts shipped to you for free.
Do Not Lean Too Far Forward or Too Far Back - Be wary to not lean too far back in your chair so that the wheels or legs lift up from the floor. Leaning too far back can cause the chair to give from under you and cause structural damage, or loosen key components that can cause the chair to break or fall apart. Not only that, but you can hurt yourself as well! On the contrary, you also need to make sure not to lean too far forward by putting all your weight on the front of your chair. The chair can tip over leading to your chair getting damaged or even worse you getting hurt by falling onto your desk.
Determine the Weight Rating - Standard office chairs are designed to hold up to 250 pounds. With the exception of specialty big and tall office chairs, with some that can hold up to 550 pounds, most office chairs you will find online can only hold a maximum weight of 250 pounds. If your weight requires a specialty chair, it is best to pay the extra money to get one otherwise your chair will not be under warranty and will exponentially increase the chances of it breaking much quicker. Big and tall office chairs are constructed with heavy-duty components, sometimes this even includes and all indestructible steel frame, and are specifically designed for tough environments. Every good office chair website will have a place on their product pages that explains the maximum capacity for each chair and if you are unable to find that information do not be afraid to ask.

Replace Your RipStik Wheels - The Easy Way!
The RipStik is a popular caster-board created by the "Razor" company (known for their successful Razor Scooter.) Two separate small platforms are conjoined by a bar which rotates using a heavy duty spring. Each platform or "deck" hosts a rotating wheel identical to a roller blade wheel.
The construction of the board allows a person to propel themselves using a twisting motion of the body and legs to move the two decks and wheels. The feeling of riding a caster board has been attributed to being like riding a snowboard or surfboard.
Heavy Duty Caster Wheels
Repairing a standard RipStik wheel is a simple process which is not unlike replacing a roller blade or skateboard wheel.
To begin you will need a few things. You will need a pair of needle drivers (or similar) which will act as a crowbar to remove the bearing from the wheel, a new roller 76mm blade wheel (which are the same as RipStik Wheels), or two, if your going to be replacing the front and back wheel. You will also need two alan wrenches (also know has alan keys) 3/15th in size.
First of all, you will need to remove the wheel out from the RipStik truck. Place one alan key on the right side of the wheel, inside the bolt, the other on the left hand side of the bolt. Now, twist one alan key anti-clockwise to un-screw the bolt while holding the other side to keep it from twisting. Continue rotating the alan key until you have completely un-screwed the bolt.
Once the wheels is out your going to take the needle drivers and pry out the bearing away from the inside of the wheel. Once the two bearings are out you will be able to place the bearings inside the new RipStik wheel. Put the bearings in the middle part of the wheel (taking care it does not fall over while it is inside the wheel) and press in the bearing.
Once you have both bearings in the new wheel, take your wheel and place it in the truck. Now place your bolt in through the truck, the wheel and the bearing. Tighten the bolts until they are very firm to make sure they are secure. Be careful not to over tighten your bolt as this could cause your bearings to seize. Once you have got your RipStik Wheels tightened you'll be good to go and you will have a new RipStik Wheel to race along with.

How To Choose The Right Caster Wheels - Part 1
So you are about to make a dollie and need casters and wheels. Now don't go off and grab just any set of casters and wheels that you may find. Before you make your decision you need to figure out the specifics as to what the dollie will be mainly used for. There are many factors to take into consideration. Number one, don't think that any caster will support what you're going to me moving.
Being a former employee of a music company's distribution division, I have experienced first hand what can happen when you decide to go cheap or get lazy and not do your homework. Moving everything from light keyboards with attached stands to church organs to nine foot grand pianos you have got to be prepared for the environments you will be working in. You find out real quick how costly it can be when you neglect to do your homework or just go cheap. Prime example... Our manager purchased and put together a new dollie with questionable plastic wheels. The dollie sat in a truck during a freezing cold winter night. The next morning we arrived at one of our warehouses to pick up a custom seven foot grand piano made to order. As my fellow worker and I used the new dollie to transfer the piano into the truck, one of the new plastic casters shattered from the severe cold, throwing the custom seven foot grand piano abruptly to the ground. The damage was catastrophic! The customer was irate. The company had to take the hit and order a new piano and in the end the manager was no longer our manager.
Heavy Duty Caster Wheels
Two major questions you need to ask yourself prior to purchasing casters would be...
1. What will you be using it for? Yes, I know, for moving, but moving what? Are they particularly heavy items?
2. What is the environment you will be mostly using it in? Will it be used outside as much as inside, on tile, or on carpet?
With so many wheel/caster options available, it can be quite the challenge to make a selection for your application. Let's cover the first few important steps prior to purchasing caster wheels for your application.
First and foremost is Caster Capacity. The caster capacity is the total weight an individual caster can support. In order to figure which caster capacity best suits your application you must follow this equation... Divide the total weight of the maximum load you will be needing the casters for by the number of casters you are going to attach to the dollie. Now choose the caster with a caster capacity greater than or equal to your result.
There are guidelines for regarding types of casters and floor surface ratings that should be taken into consideration.
Asphalt: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended for use on asphalt.
Concrete: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good for use, and Iron or Semi-Steel are a fair choice.
Tile: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel should not be used.
Hardwood Flooring: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended what so ever.
Carpets: Polyurethane, Semi to Full Pneumatics, Phenolic (molded plastic), and Polyolefin are all good for use, but Iron or Semi-Steel can cut in and not get very good grip while transferring.

Pros And Cons Of Pneumatic Tires In Heavy Duty Industrial Caster Applications
Pneumatic tires are a popular wheel option in industrial caster applications. Pneumatic tires are wheels with a metal hub with a rubber tire mounted to it. The tire is filled with air or foam to a desired pressure level to achieve the appropriate load and deflection characteristics. There are many benefits to using this type of wheel as well as a few drawbacks. This article will discuss the pros and cons to using pneumatic wheels in your caster application.
Pros
Heavy Duty Caster Wheels
Pneumatic tires have many benefits in industrial caster applications. The main benefit is the ability to absorb shock loads from impacts and cushion the load. So pneumatics are used in applications with uneven or bumpy terrain or where the contents of the cart must not be subjected to sudden shock loads. Pneumatic tires can also be used off-road as they can absorb the unevenness of off road terrain. These wheels lend themselves well to applications that require both off-road an on pavement operation. Pneumatic tires are also quiet in use because of the soft rubber tread and shock absorbing ability. This helps improve the working conditions of the personnel since they are not subjected to loud noises which could damage their hearing.
Cons
There are also some drawbacks to using pneumatic wheels in industrial caster applications. One drawback is the wheels require more force to start in motion. This is due to the large footprint and deflection of the air filled tire. This large footprint also make the wheels harder to swivel and often the caster will require a longer swivel lead. Because the wheels are lighter, the chance of caster wheel flutter also increases, which can be negated by the increased swivel lead. Another drawback to pneumatic wheels is the increased maintenance of having to monitor air pressure because the wheels are easy to puncture, which results in flats. One way to get around this is to fill the wheels with polyurethane foam, which prevents flats but reduces the cushioning affect of the wheels.
Pneumatic tires can provide some great benefits in industrial caster applications, such as shock absorbing and providing the ability to go off-road. However, there are drawbacks such as reduced roll-ability and increased chance of flutter that must be dealt with. When taking these factors into consideration when designing the pneumatic tire for your industrial caster application, your chances for success are greatly improved.

How to Select the Proper Casters and Wheels for Your Application
Many factors must be taken into consideration in order to select the proper industrial caster or wheel. To make the most appropriate selection for your application, consider the following:
Load Weight - The heavier the load, the larger the wheel required for the caster. The weight of the load also influences wheel mobility. For heavy duty loads over 400 lbs., roller or ball bearings are recommended.
Floor Conditions - Be sure the wheel selected is large enough to pass over cracks in the floor, tracks, molding, and other obstructions. Use polyurethane or Performa rubber wheels for floor protection on linoleum, tile, carpet, etc.
Unusual Conditions - Each wheel material has characteristics which will provide the best results where unusual conditions exist. For example Polyurethane, polyolefin, phenolic, or steel wheels are recommended where acids, oils, chemicals, and other substances harmful to rubber are present.
Rolling Ease - The larger the wheel, the easier it rolls. While roller bearing wheels can carry heavier loads, ball bearing wheels roll more easily but carry lighter loads. Whenever possible, use the largest ball bearing wheel necessary for best results.
Extreme Climates - Room temperatures are not a problem for most casters. However extreme cold and heat can be a problem. Bastian casters come standard with lubrication designed to withstand temperatures from 450°F below zero to 2600°F above zero.
Shock Load - The impact caused by dropping a load on a cart or truck, or by rolling on a rough surface. When encountering shock loading, you will need to look at four things: construction of the caster, type of kingpin, swivel bearing, and the composition of the wheel.
Heavy Duty Caster Wheels
Caster Types
Rigid - A rigid caster has a rigid yoke and wheel assembly which permits only straight-line movement.
Swivel - A swivel caster has a swivel yoke and wheel assembly that will allow rotation of 360 degrees, which permits movement in any direction.
Locking - A locking caster is an assembly that can be locked in place by some sort of mechanic device.
Caster Parts Definitions & Nomenclature
Wheel Diameter - Wheel diameter is the outer nominal diameter of the wheel.
Bolt Hole Spacing - Bolt hole spacing is the distance measured from the center of the bolt hole to the opposite center of the other bolt hole.
caster Size - A loose term for classifying casters, based on the nominal diameter of the wheel. For example, a "6 inch caster" is any caster having a 6 inch diameter wheel.
Hub Length Hub length is the widest part of the hub (including bearing assembly and thread guards).
Overall Height - Overall height is the vertical distance between floor and mounting plate. (NOTE: casters with threaded stems are measured to the top washer and do not include the length of the threaded stem).
Bore Diameter - Bore diameter is the distance measured through the center of the wheel.
Tread Width/Face - The outer surface of the wheel, in contact with the ground. The width of the wheel tread cross-section, measured at the base of the tread rather than at the point of floor contact.
Plate Dimension - Plate dimension is the measured distance from one edge of the top plate to the opposite side and the distance from the other edge of the top plate to the opposite side.
Capacity - The maximum recommended lad per caster or wheel based on intermittent operation over smooth floors at speeds not exceeding 3 mph, with no shock loading or adverse environmental conditions. Gross weight of a truck or dolly should be divided by the number of casters or wheels on which the weight is distributed.
Swivel Radius - A swivel radius is the horizontal distance from vertical centerline of kingpin to outside edge of wheel tread. Specifies minimum clearance required for mounted caster to swivel 360 degrees.
Offset/Swivel Lead - The perpendicular distance between the vertical centerlines of the kingpin and the axle of a swivel caster. Larger offsets afford easier swiveling, shorter offsets greater strength.
Swivel Lead -Swivel lead is the horizontal distance between vertical centerlines through kingpin and wheel center.
Caster Measurement Definitions & Nomenclature
Durometer - A measure of the hardness of resilient tread wheels. Component Thrust - Designates side forces exerted on a swivel caster and properly counteracted by the secondary load bearing. Roll ability - Ease of starting and rolling, measured by drawbar pull. This is determined by load, floor conditions, and type and size of wheels and bearings. Direct Thrust - Designates those downward forces exerted on a caster by the load, and counteracted by the main load bearing.
